We would like to thank and congratulate our fabulous students on their performances at last night's Care and Share concerts. This year, STE played concerts in three different locations: Garneau Hall Seniors Community, Grey Nuns Community Hospital, and at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. Special thank you goes to the staff at the three locations for facilitating these concerts, our parents and volunteers for their assistance and support, and to our faculty members who led the performers!

Starting TOMORROW! (Oct 22, 2025) we invite our STE members to our Day Program hosted by our Senior Student Programming Coordinator, Conrad Sobieraj. 1:00pm - 3:00pm on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this week in Studio 4. Until a fair deal is reached and the strike ends, come on in and participate in music appreciation, creativity, jamming, and - of course - the fun and games!

Happy Birthday Shinichi Suzuki! Born on this day in 1898, the violinist/philosopher/composer/educator (pictured here listening intently to a pupil playing from the heart!) introduced a truly fascinating method of music education to the world.

The Suzuki Method, while famous for its rigorous ear-training and the repetition of familiar repertoire, is as much about music as it is about life itself. Suzuki advocated for parent involvement in lessons and practice - known as the "Suzuki Triangle" - where the student, the parent, and the teacher all share roles and responsibilities to the benefit of the child's development.

In his book, "Nurtured By Love", Suzuki recounts various stories from Suzuki students going on to win principal positions in orchestras, memorizing concertos by ear, to simply learning how to behave at the dinner table. His "Mother Tongue" philosophy is utilized in the classroom and at home, where pupils learn from each other in the group lessons and from recordings/parents at home. Calling all new and expecting parents, join us in January for our Suzuki Early Childhood Education class!

Suzuki Early Childhood Education (SECE) is a program in which a mixed age group of children meet weekly, building on concepts and skills laid out in the SECE repertoire while interacting with one another, their parents, and the teachers. The parent plays a central role in all activities in the belief that the parent is the child’s first and most important teacher. Through parent participation in prenatal, baby, and preschool classes, parents become partners in providing an enriched natural environment for the growth of their children.

Join our experimental improvisation ensemble! No experience needed, you don't even need an instrument; you can use some of our small percussion instruments, you can bring sticks and stones, or just use your own body to create sound. The focus of this group class is as much social as it is musical. Students learn to communicate without words, instead using gestures and queues to keep the music going. Every class is a new piece of music, a new invention, and a new inspiration. Starting on September 22, 2025 - every Monday at 6:25pm, see you there!

The ultimate goal of any instrument is to sound as close to the human voice as possible. Singing is one of the most foundational musical instruments. The benefits of choir does not only cover using the voice to hum a melody. Vocal training and choral work develops the inner ear - improving intonation - establishes a relationship between breathing and musical phrasing - which will make music on any instrument sound more organic. Two weeks until group classes start up again! STE

Two weeks until group classes start up again! STE offers a variety of group classes including Suzuki String Groups, Orchestra, Improvisation, Chamber Group , Choir, Jazz Ensemble, Piano and Guitar Groups, etc. Weekly group lessons are usually offered on Monday evening between 4:30-7:30, September to April. Ensembles, Choir, and Piano/Guitar groups are on other weekdays. Students who are taking private lessons with STE can participate the group classes for FREE. You will receive member sign-up emails.

Welcome Sara! Our new piano faculty!

Sara Soufisiavash is a classically trained pianist and
educator with over a decade of teaching experience. She
holds a Master of Music in Piano Performance from the
University of Alberta, where she received multiple awards
in recognition of her academic achievement and musical
excellence. She has taught students of all ages in both
private and group settings, with a focus on building strong
technical foundations and expressive artistry.

An active performer, Ms. Soufisiavash has appeared as a
soloist, chamber musician, and collaborative pianist, and
has performed with ensembles including the University of
Alberta Symphony Orchestra and the River City Chamber
Orchestra in Edmonton. She is also a recipient of the
Royal Canadian College of Organists (RCCO) Organ
Scholarship, highlighting her broad musical expertise and
dedication to the field.

Under the instruction of Laura Mackay, STE choir explores the basics of healthy, age-appropriate vocal technique and ensemble singing, all while learning a fun and diverse range of songs and repertoire for performance. Today in composer birthdays: Lili Boulanger (1893-1918). Sister of another notable composer, Nadia Boulanger, the French composer and musician Lili Boulanger made history by being the first woman to win the Grand Prix de Rome composition prize. She knew how to sing by ear and read music before she knew the alphabet!

Solo performances too exposed? Large ensembles too drowned out?... This is where chamber ensembles come to save the day! Chamber playing is the musical equivalent of hangin' out with your closest pals - sharing stories, intellectual discussions - it's by-far one of the best inside-joke-generating activities known to humankind. It is only $400 for the year (for non STE members), must be able to read music, now accepting students in piano, bass, cello, violin, viola, and guitar!

The camp’s closing concert was officially a week

The camp’s closing concert was officially a week ago today, and we are STILL thinking about it. So much talent, dedication, and joy. Next year’s talent camp cant come soon enough. We wanted to give a special thank you to everyone involved: the volunteers who supervised, staff who coordinated food and activities, teachers and coaches, and of course our students who performed so well and prepared so wonderfully.
