Celebrate the Season 2025 once again had students from Society for Talent Education fill the Serbian Hall with music. We would like to thank the Serbian Hall for facilitating our concert; our parents and volunteers who helped set-up and tear-down, and who brought food for the potluck!; our faculty that lead the groups; and last, but certainly not least, our dedicated and talented students who performed SO well. Happy Friday! Today we wish a happy birthday to Fa

Happy Friday! Today we wish a happy birthday to Fanny Mendelssohn. A German pianist and composer, Fanny Mendelssohn composed over 450 works - most of which went unpublished due to societal patriarchy of the time - and was known to have impeccable piano technique and musicality, having memorized all 24 Preludes from Bach's Well Tempered Clavier at age 14.

Due to society's rigid gender roles, her brother, Felix Mendelssohn, would publish her works under his name. She eventually took the leap and bravely published her own works under a new married name, Fanny Hensel. Fanny Mendelssohn's story is one of history's most well-documented examples of gender oppression in music, to say how incredibly lucky we are to have her survived catalogue of pieces is an understatement. We would like to thank and congratulate our fabulous students on their performances at last night's Care and Share concerts. This year, STE played concerts in three different locations: Garneau Hall Seniors Community, Grey Nuns Community Hospital, and at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. Special thank you goes to the staff at the three locations for facilitating these concerts, our parents and volunteers for their assistance and support, and to our faculty members who led the performers!

Until a fair deal is reached and the strike ends, come on in and participate in music appreciation, creativity, jamming, and - of course - the fun and games!

Happy Birthday Shinichi Suzuki! Born on this day in 1898, the violinist/philosopher/composer/educator (pictured here listening intently to a pupil playing from the heart!) introduced a truly fascinating method of music education to the world.

The Suzuki Method, while famous for its rigorous ear-training and the repetition of familiar repertoire, is as much about music as it is about life itself. Suzuki advocated for parent involvement in lessons and practice - known as the "Suzuki Triangle" - where the student, the parent, and the teacher all share roles and responsibilities to the benefit of the child's development.

In his book, "Nurtured By Love", Suzuki recounts various stories from Suzuki students going on to win principal positions in orchestras, memorizing concertos by ear, to simply learning how to behave at the dinner table. His "Mother Tongue" philosophy is utilized in the classroom and at home, where pupils learn from each other in the group lessons and from recordings/parents at home. Calling all new and expecting parents, join us in January for our Suzuki Early Childhood Education class!

Suzuki Early Childhood Education (SECE) is a program in which a mixed age group of children meet weekly, building on concepts and skills laid out in the SECE repertoire while interacting with one another, their parents, and the teachers. The parent plays a central role in all activities in the belief that the parent is the child’s first and most important teacher. Through parent participation in prenatal, baby, and preschool classes, parents become partners in providing an enriched natural environment for the growth of their children.
