Whether it be attending rehearsals and carefully preparing pieces of music, to setting up/tearing down chairs and stands, to taking notes during lessons, the Suzuki Triangle presents itself through each task: as skills and responsibilities shared between teacher, parent, and child. We at STE are so grateful to see the strength of that bond at the lesson and on the stage, and we are so excited to welcome everyone back next year, and to nurture that Suzuki Triangle so much more. 💜

Just under two weeks until our year-end concert! Our groups are at work and fine-tuning an absolutely epic program full of adventure: ships and pirates, pharaohs and pyramids, stories of the old, present, and the future.

Active listening, gestural communication, and the

Active listening, gestural communication, and the exploration of sound; any ensemble - be it a chamber duo, or an orchestra - cannot function without these three skills.

The ear plays a much larger role in what pitch or dynamic to play next, once the visual aspect of “notes on a page” is removed (just for a while). The unpredictable nature of improvised music forces students to engage and understand one another non-verbally. Through experimental improvisation, students are encouraged to “think outside the box” in terms of musical expression and composition, all while contributing to a unifying sonic timbre. After all, it’s nice when it sounds composed!

We are beyond excited to invite ESO Violist Clayto

We are beyond excited to invite ESO Violist Clayton Leung to host our STE Orchestra Adjudication Workshop.

Clayton Leung is an accomplished musician who has established a strong presence in the vibrant Edmonton arts scene. He has graced the stages of organizations such as the Alberta Baroque Society, Chamber Orchestra of Edmonton, Early Music Alberta, Edmonton Chamber Music Society, Edmonton Recital Society, Edmonton Ballet and the Edmonton Opera. Clayton’s musical journey has taken him beyond national borders, as he has performed with various ensembles both nationally and internationally. Notable performances include a European tour with Kent Sangster’s Obsession's Jazz Octet, a live concert on PBS at Rochester International Jazz Festival, a lecture recital at the 50th International Viola Congress in Paris and a guest violist on Lafayette String Quartet’s farewell tour.

Meet cello faculty, Mark Eeles. Mark has been play

Meet cello faculty, Mark Eeles. Mark has been playing cello for 56 years, and started when he was 11 years old in a Suzuki strings program in Calgary with Thomas Rolston. He began on piano, but once he discovered the sound of the cello, it took over. When he was 18, he went to Julliard and got his Bachelor of Music under the instruction of Harvey Shapiro. After his time there, he pursued an education at the University of Alberta with Claude Kenneson where he restarted his Suzuki journey. Mark has been teaching at the Society for Talent Education since 1980.

His main teachers were Harvey Shapiro and Claude Kenneson, both of whom had connections to a famous violinist and pedagogue Demetrius Constantine Dounis, a contemporary of Shinichi Suzuki.

“Since my two main teachers all had connections to Dounis is kind of interesting, as my work as a teacher has been to take what both [Shapiro and Kenneson] said and apply it to the Suzuki method. Their philosophy of playing fits naturally into the Suzuki philosophy. I boil down what I think the Suzuki method is to: Train the ear and the body will follow, train the gestures and the music will come alive, one interval at a time."

In Mark’s studio, Suzuki Volume 1 - 3 is about “training the ear and the body will follow”, and Volume 4 and above is more about training the exact gestures that the ears guide.

“We want to make sure that what we hear and what we feel, is one. ‘Mother tongue’ is about hearing the music and learning it on the basis of how it sounds, [and] the ear is always what generates the movement.”

Only two weeks away from our annual STE Graduation Gala! Preparations are underway and our graduates are practicing tirelessly for an outstanding performance on Saturday March 14th, 2026.

We’re not out of the cold yet! Edmonton winters have temperatures that drop to extremes, which affects instrument health. Instruments are very fragile, and quite sensitive to climate. It is important to keep this in mind when going between school and lessons during the winter with an instrument, that we take necessary precautions to avoid damages and a possible visit to the repair shop!

Today in composer birthdays: Arcangelo Corelli (16

Today in composer birthdays: Arcangelo Corelli (1653 - 1713). The violinist, conductor, and composer was a trailblazer for the virtuosic string repertoire, especially for violin, pushing musical forms beyond intimate chamber settings (sonatas, trios) and towards concert halls and extravagant ballrooms (concerti grossi and symphonies). He was known to work as a great concert manager, hiring up to 150 musicians to perform his own works (and that's just for one function!) Corelli stood on the precipice of the old renaissance style of music, and helped pave the way for the "new" Baroque style at the time, his harmonic language normalized the styles heard in the music of Antonio Vivaldi and Johann Sebastian Bach.
